Frequently Asked Questions

A pre-apprenticeship training program is a structured educational initiative designed to prepare individuals for entry into an apprenticeship program in the construction industry. It provides fundamental skills, knowledge, and hands-on experience to ensure participants are well-equipped for a successful apprenticeship.

Apprenticeship training is a formal system combining on-the-job training with related technical instruction to produce competent craftworkers. With a written contract between the apprentice and employer or apprenticeship program sponsor, it is registered with the State of Minnesota, specifying the length of training, school hours, skills to be learned, and wages. Over 10,000 women and men participate in Building Trades apprenticeships in Minnesota.

A construction career takes various forms, involving working with hands and mind, outdoor work, teamwork, and pride in completed projects supporting community development.

The program is open to individuals aged 18 or older, with a high school diploma or equivalent, able to pass a drug screen, possessing a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation, not currently enrolled in a construction union or trade program, legally eligible to work in the U.S., and able to communicate in English.

The training covers essential topics, including safety protocols, basic construction math, tool usage, and hands-on skills development, providing a comprehensive foundation for success in an apprenticeship.

While the program doesn't guarantee job placement, it significantly improves employability in the construction industry. Collaboration with industry partners may lead to apprenticeship opportunities for program graduates.

The orientation training comprises self-paced learning modules, interest assessments, and conversations with the Program Navigator, estimated to take approximately 40 hours.

The Program Navigator guides individuals through their career development journey. They offer personalized guidance, assist in resource navigation, conduct assessments, inform about education and training opportunities, provide job search support, and build professional networks. Advocacy, empowerment, progress monitoring, and support during challenging times are integral to their role.
